Have A Say In My Next Book!!

Greetings all and Happy New Year!!!

With the completion of What If God Is Like This and the arrival of 2012, my resolution is to turn my attention to book two which will be titled: The Human Side of Christ.

This book is going to examine Jesus as the human being that actually walked this Earth. How much did God limit Himself when he took on the flesh of man? Just how well is He able to relate to our plight? So as I research this book I'm curious as to what questions you all might want me to explore? Are there questions you have or concepts you have wondered about when it comes to the "man" Jesus Christ? Think about it and if you come up with something feel free to send me an email.

Also, if you feel like it, one of the things that will help me promote my first book are reviews. If any of you would be willing to leave a review on the book's Amazon or Barnes and Noble page I would deeply appreciate it. Right now, to find the book on Amazon you have to search by title. If you search by my name it is like the 40th option. It humbleing to be the only Will Hathaway on Amazon and still be the 40th pick......haha. :)

Amazon Update

Greeting all,

What If God Is Like This is now up on Amazon and Barnes and Noble! For some reason the picture of the book is not yet up on Amazon but it is on Barnes and Noble. You will notice that the price of the book is significantly higher on the two websites and that is due to their mark up to make a profit. You can order a signed copy for 19.95 plus shipping on my website: But if you do order a copy and if you are willing to, I would really appreciate people writing a little review of your thoughts on Amazon.

Again thank you all for your encouragement and support during this process!!

Christmas Eve

I was on my way into church tonight for Christmas Eve service and passed a car pulled over on the side of the road. As we got closer, I could see a guy down in the ditch kneeling at a well maintained roadside cross. It broke my heart to be honest. Christmas is a lot of things to us, not the least of which is a time to draw near those who are closest to us. I felt sadness at this man's loss and a deeper appreciation for my family. But I also felt a surge of hope that it is because of Christmas that the grave is not the end for us. Thank you Lord Jesus! Thank you for coming for us, thank you for overpowering death, thank you for setting us free! And please Lord on this tender night hold close the man on the side of the road.

Merry Christmas to all.

Following too Closely

One of the cardinal sins of driving is to follow another vehicle too closely. It doesn't really matter who is in the other car honestly. Suppose you are following a friend to their house, you would want to follow, but for safety, you would still want to leave some distance between your car and their car. That way if something happened you would have a better chance of avoiding an accident. Another advantage of leaving space is that it allows you a more full view of the entire environment. You can follow your leader but still take in the surrounding view. The closer you drive the more you have to focus on the car in front and the more narrow your field of view will become.

I think this can work very much the same in religion. It's great for people to follow a belief system but when we follow too closely, I'm afraid we tend to lose perspective of the world around us. Jesus accused the religious leaders of his day of doing this when they created all kinds of silly additional rules for people to follow.  My pastor shared with me this week that he heard of a church where the congregants would play marbles in the isles because Jesus taught we are to be like children!

I think the fastest route to radicalism at worst and legalism at best is to follow your belief system so closely that you lose touch with the world around you. I think a test for this is to ask how certain one is that the people around them are going to hell. The more certain, the more likely someone has probably lost touch with the rest of humanity. If we aren't careful we will latch on to a smaller portion of the belief system than what is available simply because we are following so closely that our view is narrowed.

So with that I say, I want to follow Christ, I want to study the Bible and learn from its teachings, how to love and how to live. I will follow.............just not too closely.

Is It Bad to be Selfish??

Is it bad to be selfish?  After all, isn't self the main motivator for humanity in most cases.  Even our acts of selflessness can often be traced to at least a hint of selfishness in that we draw pleasure from being kind.  We feel better about ourselves when we are general anyway.

Jesus taught us to live lives that are free of sin in which we are to "deny" ourselves put others first.  Is it possible that it is in the act of attempting to live a selfless life that we can obtain the greatest levels of peace?  Perhaps it is by loving others before ourselves that we will actually be the most happy?  If thats the case, selflessness and love can actually be a selfish, maybe it isn't all that bad to be selfish......sometimes.
