Why are we so scared of death?

There are several songs out about living life as if we were dying.  It's interesting to listen to people talk about what they would do if they only had a short time left to live.  A lot of us talk about doing all sorts of extraordinary things in our final days.  This got me wondering about life and death a bit.

Is the reason most of us are scared to die because we know in our hearts that we haven't really experienced life?  When given the option of a limited time to live we suddenly want to cram as much life as possible into the remaining days.  What if we lived our lives this way anyway?  What if everyday we got up and lived life to the full?  Maybe we would be limited to some degree by finances, but what if in every other way we did it?  Would we still be as scared of death if our meeting with it were scheduled?  Perhaps if we truly lived we would be able to shed our fear of death, knowing that we are leaving nothing unfinished behind.

Perhaps the fear of death isn't the fear of death at all........perhaps it is simply the fear of life unlived.
